Not all oud oil is created equal, and one of the most important factors determining the character of an oil is the method used to extract it from the wood. There are three primary distillation methods used in the artisanal oud world, and each produces fundamentally different results. Understanding these differences is essential for anyone serious about oud.
Hydro-distillation is the traditional method that has been used for centuries. The agarwood chips or powder are submerged directly in water inside the still, then heated. The water carries the aromatic compounds as steam, which is then cooled and condensed. The oil separates from the water and is collected. This method produces rich, complex oils with deep base notes, but requires significant time and fuel. The soaking period before distillation varies depending on the wood characteristics, but experienced distillers typically soak for less than 36 hours.
Steam distillation is the most popular method among artisanal distillers today, and for good reason. Instead of submerging the wood in water, pressurised steam is passed through the material. The critical factor is temperature. According to experienced Indonesian distillers, the ideal range is between 85 and 95 degrees Celsius. At this low temperature, the natural aroma of the agarwood is extracted faithfully without the risk of burning the oils. The result is an oil that smells remarkably close to the raw wood itself. The trade-off is yield. Steam distillation at low temperatures produces significantly less oil than other methods.
Vacuum distillation is the third method, and it is the most controversial. This technique uses very high pressure and temperatures, typically between 125 and 140 degrees Celsius or even higher. The advantage is purely commercial. Vacuum distillation can produce two to three times more oil than steam distillation from the same amount of wood. For large-scale commercial operations, this makes it highly profitable. The disadvantage is significant. The extreme heat and pressure damage delicate aromatic compounds, resulting in oils that lack the complexity, nuance, and natural character of traditionally distilled specimens.
A reliable indicator when evaluating a vendor is the quantity of oil they offer relative to their operation size. If a small distiller claims to have large volumes of oil available, it almost certainly means they are using low-quality materials combined with vacuum distillation. Artisanal distillers working with genuine high-grade wood and traditional methods simply cannot produce oil in large quantities. The scarcity is not a marketing trick. It is a physical reality of working with rare, natural materials at low temperatures.
