To understand the true value of wild agarwood, you need to understand the mathematics of its rarity. The numbers are staggering, and they explain why prices for genuine wild oud continue to rise year after year.
In the wild, only an estimated 2 to 7 percent of Aquilaria trees develop natural agarwood infection. Of those infected trees, only a fraction produce resin of significant quality — the deep, heavily saturated heartwood that yields premium oud oil. The finest grade, sinking-quality agarwood (wood so dense with resin that it sinks in water), may represent less than one percent of all naturally infected trees.
Now consider the time factor. A wild Aquilaria tree takes decades to develop high-quality resin. The best wild oud comes from infections that have been progressing for 50 to 100 years or more. These are trees that were already old when your grandparents were young. Every one of these trees that is harvested removes something that cannot be replaced within a human lifetime.
The demand side of the equation makes the situation even more acute. Global demand for oud has increased enormously over the past three decades, driven by the explosion of oud-based perfumery in the West and sustained consumption in the Gulf states. Conservative estimates put the global oud market at several billion dollars annually. This demand is being directed at a resource that is finite and shrinking.
The practical consequence is straightforward: genuine wild oud of high quality will only become rarer and more expensive. Collectors who acquire authentic wild specimens today are holding materials that will never be produced again in their current form. This is not marketing — it is ecological reality. Every gram of genuine wild oud is a piece of irreplaceable natural heritage, and it should be appreciated as such.
