In the wine world, the concept of terroir is fundamental. The idea that the specific soil, climate, altitude, and environment of a place impart unique and irreplicable characteristics to the product. This concept applies to oud with equal force, yet it is rarely discussed with the depth it deserves. The truth is that two oils distilled from the same species, using the same method, can smell completely different because of where and how the trees grew.
Altitude is one of the most powerful variables. Within a single province or even a single island, agarwood found at higher elevations produces different aromatic compounds than wood found at sea level. Higher altitude trees grow more slowly, experience greater temperature variation between day and night, and develop resin under different stress conditions. The resulting oils often have a cooler, more refined, and sometimes more austere character compared to the warmer, denser profiles of lowland specimens.
The environment where the wood is found matters enormously, particularly for dead and buried wood. Merauke agarwood from southern Papua is a perfect example. The Aquilaria filaria trees in this region are found as dead specimens buried beneath swampy ground. The prolonged exposure to waterlogged, anaerobic soil conditions creates unique chemical transformations in the resin. The resulting oil has a very dark, intensely earthy character with sweet tobacco and toffee notes and a distinctive oakmoss quality that lingers. This profile is fundamentally different from filaria oil sourced from dead trees that were not buried, even within the same broader region.
Coastal versus inland positioning also creates measurable differences. On Natuna island, dead agarwood trees found near the beach produce oils with a different aromatic signature than those found at higher altitudes surrounding the mountain interior of the island. The salt air, sandy soil, and coastal humidity all influence how the resin develops and how it smells when distilled. Even experienced collectors who have tried dozens of Indonesian ouds are often surprised when they compare coastal Natuna to highland Natuna side by side.
The practical implication for buyers and collectors is profound. When evaluating an oud oil, the country of origin is only the beginning. The specific region, the altitude, the soil type, whether the wood was from a living or dead tree, and whether it was found above or below ground all contribute to the final aromatic profile. This is why two vendors selling Papuan oud can offer oils that smell nothing alike, and why both can be completely authentic. Oud is not a commodity. It is a natural material shaped by millions of years of ecology, and every drop tells the story of the place where it was born.
