Perfume Concentrations Explained — From Body Splash to Pure

Parfum When you see terms like Eau de Toilette, Eau de Parfum, or Extrait on a fragrance bottle, these are not just marketing labels. They refer to specific concentration levels of aromatic compounds in the formula, and they directly affect the strength, longevity, and character of the scent you experience. A Body Splash or Body Spray contains the lowest concentration, typically between one and three percent aromatic compounds. These are light, refreshing, and fade quickly. Cologne sits slightly higher at four to seven percent, traditionally associated with citrus-forward, lighter compositions. Eau de Toilette contains seven to ten percent aromatic compounds and provides moderate projection and longevity, lasting several hours on the skin. Eau de Parfum is where things get serious, containing ten to twenty percent aromatic compounds. This concentration lasts up to ten hours and is the most common format for premium fragrances. Parfum, also known as Extrait de Parfum, sits at the top with twenty to forty percent aromatic content. Some Arabian perfume houses push this even higher, reaching concentrations of forty percent or more. At this level, the fragrance is rich, long lasting, and requires only the smallest amount. For artisan perfumers working with oud, concentration decisions are critical. Pure oud oil is essentially a natural Extrait, an undiluted aromatic material of extraordinary potency. When creating an oud-based perfume, artisans must decide how much of this precious oil to use relative to the carrier. Experienced perfumers recommend experimenting with different concentration levels, testing batches at twenty, twenty-seven, thirty-five, and forty-five percent to find the ideal balance for each specific oil. An important practical tip from artisanal perfumers: if you have a limited amount of precious oil, always start with a higher concentration. You can always dilute later, but you cannot concentrate an already diluted perfume. And always document every step, the exact amounts, the carrier used, the date of mixing. Your memory is unreliable. Your notebook is not. Discussion: 💬 Do you prefer wearing pure oud oil or oud-based perfumes at a specific concentration? What concentration do you find works best on your skin?
