Kalimantan, Borneo & Brunei — The Hidden Treasures of Island Southeast Asia

The island of Borneo — shared between Indonesia (Kalimantan), Malaysia (Sarawak and Sabah), and the small sultanate of Brunei — is one of the most diverse and productive agarwood regions in the world. Yet it remains less well-known among casual oud enthusiasts than India or Cambodia. Kalimantan, the Indonesian portion of Borneo, produces some of the most interesting and varied ouds available today. The vast rainforests of East, West, North, and Central Kalimantan each yield agarwood with distinct characteristics. Tarakan oud, from the small island off North Kalimantan, has achieved near-legendary status among collectors for its clean, sweet, woody profile with remarkable longevity. Malinau, also in North Kalimantan, produces darker, more resinous oils. Brunei occupies a tiny but ecologically significant portion of Borneo’s northwest coast. The sultanate’s remaining old-growth forests harbour Aquilaria species — including the rare Aquilaria hirta — that produce oud of exceptional quality. Bruneian oud is prized for its complexity and refinement, though it is extremely difficult to source due to the small scale of production and strict environmental protections. Malaysian Borneo — Sarawak and Sabah — has a long history of agarwood harvesting and trade, particularly with Chinese and Japanese markets. Sarawak oud tends toward a green, fresh, woody profile, while Sabah produces slightly heavier, more resinous oils. What makes Borneo special is its sheer biodiversity. Multiple Aquilaria species grow on the island, often in close proximity, and the range of micro-climates — from coastal lowlands to mountain interiors — creates an extraordinary diversity of oud profiles from a single landmass.
