The transformation of agarwood into oud oil is a process that requires patience, skill, and an
intimate understanding of the raw material. The two primary methods of distillation are
hydro-distillation (water distillation) and steam distillation, each producing oils with different
characteristics.
In hydro-distillation, the traditional method, agarwood chips or powder are soaked in water
for an extended period — sometimes days or weeks — before being heated in a copper or
steel still. The steam carries the volatile aromatic compounds upward, where they are cooled
and condensed. The oil separates from the water and is collected. This method tends to
produce richer, more complex oils but requires significantly more time and fuel.
Steam distillation passes pressurised steam through the wood without direct water contact.
This method is faster and more efficient, producing cleaner, often brighter oils. However,
some traditionalists argue that steam distillation misses certain heavier aromatic compounds
that only emerge through prolonged water soaking.
The quality of the resulting oil depends on numerous factors: the grade and age of the raw
wood, the soaking duration, the distillation temperature, the speed of the process, and the
skill of the distiller. A master distiller can coax extraordinary complexity from modest raw
material, while an inexperienced one can waste premium wood.
A third method, CO2 extraction, is gaining traction in the industry. This technique uses
pressurised carbon dioxide to extract aromatics without heat, preserving delicate compounds
that might be destroyed in traditional distillation. CO2 extracts tend to smell closer to the raw
wood itself.
