How Agarwood Forms — The Science Behind the Scent

Agarwood does not exist naturally inside a healthy Aquilaria tree. The tree must undergo a specific biological process before the precious resin develops. Understanding this process is fundamental to appreciating the rarity and value of genuine oud. It begins with an infection. When an Aquilaria tree is wounded — through natural damage, insect boring, or microbial attack — a fungal infection (most commonly Phialophora parasitica) can take hold. The tree responds by producing a dense, aromatic resin to isolate and combat the infection. This resin gradually saturates the surrounding heartwood over years or even decades. The longer the infection persists and the deeper the resin penetrates, the higher the quality and intensity of the resulting agarwood. First-grade wild oud has often been forming for 50 to 100 years or more. This is why old-growth wild agarwood commands prices that can exceed $100,000 per kilogram. In plantation settings, the infection process is artificially induced through inoculation — drilling holes into the tree and introducing the fungal culture. While this produces agarwood much faster (typically 5–15 years), the resulting product generally differs significantly in depth, complexity, and longevity compared to wild-harvested oud.
